MATH

In the elementary grades we use Houghton Mifflin Harcourt GO Math!

Topics in 3rd grade math include word problem solving, multiplication, measurement/data and fractions.

We have math online math homework most nights.

READING

Resources: Classroom Library, School Library

ART

Everyone is an artist as long as they believe in what they create!

We have a 2 hour art docent lesson once per month.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE

Resources: Benchmark Advance, CA Studies Weekly, Pearson

Our science and social studies units are aligned with our ELA Benchmark Advance units.

Science: In science we will study world climate zones, animal adaptations, and weather/natural disasters.

Social Studies: Third grade is all about local history.  We will start off with a review of world geography and map skills.  Later in the year we will study local Native American tribes, and the history of Placer County. We will take some fun field trips to make our learning come to life!

MUSIC AND P.E.

We have P.E. on Tuesdays and Fridays!  Please be sure that your child wears appropriate closed-toed shoes.

We have music every Thursday!  Mrs. Kauffman is an expert in her field and focuses on the benefits of music for brain development.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Resources: Benchmark, Being a Writer

Our comprehensive ELA curriculum, Benchmark Advance, focuses on teaching common core reading skills and strategies.  Through whole group and small group lessons students will practice specific reading strategies, learn foundational language & spelling patterns, and develop their writing skills.

Benchmark Advance curriculum spirals, meaning that students will continually revisit topics and skills throughout the year.  Mastery of a skill is not achieved in one unit, but rather through continual spiraling practice throughout the year.

Every single child in our class is a reader!  My goal is to help students discover what they like to read, and get them reading as much as possible.  We will have independent reading time every day.  I will conference with students individually and support every child in their reading adventure!

I do not require Accelerated Reader, nor do I use it for grading. I do not have a reward system for AR quizzes/goals, but you may make a personal arrangement with your child if you feel that AR is an effective program for them.  If you would like your child to take AR tests, they may do so during morning seatwork.

That being said, each book in our class library has been labeled with an AR level.  This can help your child to choose books at their reading level.  Your child will be assessed so that they know what level they are and can choose books that will engage them accordingly.  If you purchase a book and don't know what level it is, simply enter the title on the following webpage: http://www.arbookfind.com.

See your child's Homework Assignment Sheet for

up-to-date nightly homework assignments!

DESIGN TIME

Design Time is inspired by Google's "Genius Hour" and the concept of Makerspace. Every two weeks or so your child will participate in a Design Time challenge related to what we are studying, or a specific skill.  During Design Time students brainstorm, plan, and create inventions that help solve specific problems.  Throughout this process they develop the following skills: self-reflection, creativity, collaboration, perseverance, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and empathy.
